Qualcomm (QCOM)
The desk's stance
On our research list, not on the slate.
What the company does
The modem supplier Apple is designing out: the in-house C1 modem debuted in the iPhone 16e (2025) and spread through the lineup, and Qualcomm has told investors to expect only a sliver of Apple’s modem volume by the 2026 models. Its patent license with Apple still runs to 2027 — and its replacement customer is the datacenter: a multi-generation custom AI inference chip and interconnect deal with AWS (Sept 2026) sent the stock up 10% in a day.
In short: Designs wireless and edge-computing processors. Category: Mobile Silicon & Edge AI. Sector: Technology, Semiconductors.

Our current thesis
Updated Oct 13, 2026
The thesis
- Targeting $40B in non-handset revenue by FY2029 via automotive, IoT, and custom hyperscaler silicon.
- Robust trailing free cash flow of $10.2B funds ongoing share repurchases and balance sheet stability.
- Automotive segment expansion (+61% YoY) provides substantial multi-year diversification beyond cyclical smartphones.
Risks
- Consecutive sequential revenue declines to $9.95B and recent EPS miss highlight core handset sluggishness.
- Lags peer AVGO on top-line growth while facing imminent Apple internal modem displacement.
- Higher wafer, packaging, and memory input costs continue compressing semiconductor operating margins.
What we're watching
- Q4 FY2026 earnings on November 4, 2026 for guidance and handset demand stabilization.
- Technical support testing around the $165-$170 range following continued pullback from highs.
- Execution milestones on Amazon custom server silicon warrants and Oryon architecture deployments.
Latest
Shares trade around $174.43 after pulling back 5.3% over two weeks, reflecting consecutive sequential revenue declines to $9.95B (-4% YoY) and a recent quarterly EPS miss. While the automotive pipeline and custom hyperscaler silicon agreements support long-term targets of $40B in non-handset revenue by FY2029, near-term smartphone softness and Apple modem displacement weigh on sentiment. Trading at 17.1× forward earnings against a $194.13 mean analyst target, risk-reward remains balanced ahead of Q4 earnings on November 4, 2026.

On the Gainz Lab maps
Who it does business with
- Qualcomm supplies Apple — Modems (fading) (about $4.0B a year). Research estimate: still billions a year in modems and patent royalties, but the in-house C1 family is designed to take Qualcomm’s share to near zero.
